“Just five years after it was opened by the Queen and Prince Philip, with a great deal of publicity and high hopes for what was billed as the most eco-friendly local government building in Britain, The Keep at Falmer is facing a very uncertain future.

The Keep was the new £18 million repository designed to house the collections of East Sussex County Council’s Record Office , and its partners in this venture: the Brighton History Centre, the Mass Observation Archive held by Sussex University and the University’s own Special Collections Archive. Unfortunately, things started to go wrong even before the building opened.

Bohemia Ice House and Cream Tea Path Walk

Early 19th century Ice House, plus this year a walk around the estate to look at other surviving features.

This year, a Cream Tea Path walk (about an hour / 2 miles) will go round the estate, including part of the original path, which went to Hollington Church-in-the-Wood or Crowhurst Church.  It was popular from about 1770 to 1837, and on the way home people stopped at Bohemia farmhouse for a cream tea.  People are encouraged to wear period costume (think Poldark / Jane Austen), and can have a cream tea at Horntye Park Sports Complex, but you must book in advance for the cream tea (tel. 01424-444277).

A chance to look inside a small ice house, Grade II listed, part of a country gentlemans' estate, preserved within a mile of the modern town centre.  Due to its size, only one person can look inside at a time, except that a child must be accompanied by a responsible adult, due to the drop beyond the horizontal rail.  A torch is provided for people to look around the roof, walls and floor.

Access

The Ice House is in the car park but the very low access tunnel has limited head room and requires bending to enter the doorway.  Also, the ground is rather rough around the entrance.  Some paths on the estate are not paved, and there are some steps made from wooden logs banged into the earth.  The car park is free, all day.

Max 30 people per tour/session. Other features of the estate survive in the woods. 

There is a book explaining the history of the Walk, available from Hastings History House, 21 Courthouse Street - £2.50.  Also available during the walk and from other outlets.

Directions

Entry is from Bohemia Road, turn off it between the Fire and Police Stations, and follow signs to Horntye Park. The Ice House is on the edge of the right hand car park before you reach the gates.

Country Park - new Visitor Centre Progress Report

Rachel Ellis of Groundwork Trust reports on the progress being made on building the new visitor centre.

“The build is on track to be delivered within the 12 month contract period. As with any project it is important to build contingency into the programme to allow for unexpected delays. In our case the challenge to timelines which has used up some of our contingency was in the groundwork stages. The dry spring and the heavy clay of the site meant that digging the foundations was a longer process than hoped, the ground was extremely hard.

Since then, things have proceeded very well and the straw work is due to be carried out during September to allow for the lime render to be applied before temperatures drop. There is nothing to give us any concern that the contract period will be insufficient.” 

Appliqué hand embroidery class - Saturday 14 Sept 2019

Join this bespoke Appliqué hand embroidery class inspired by the Hastings Embroidery, an historic piece which perfectly demonstrates the Appliqué technique.

During the class you will apply 6 fabric pieces and learn the following 4 different stitches embroidery stitches: Buttonhole stitch, Stem stitch, Fly Stitch and Couching.

You will be using a selection of beautiful threads including stranded cottons, chenille thread, metallic thread and a flat satin cord.

Bridgepoint Rye, Rock Channel

The class runs from 10am to 4pm (please arrive by 9.45am) and you will also have the rare opportunity to see this impressive embroidery at the site of the new creative arts centre at Bridgepoint Rye, Rock Channel, Rye, East Sussex.

The class kit must be bought from the tutor on the day for £25 (cash only) and will include everything you require to complete the project.

 
You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.

Blessing of the Sea at Hastings RNLI Lifeboat Station. - 12th June

Chaplain of the Fishermen's Church, the Rev Herbert Sanders from 1894-1916.  Sanders was a certificated seaman, and he started the annual Blessing of the Sea, which still takes place today.

Hastings is the home of one of the few survivors of the once widespread custom of Blessing the Sea in Rogationtide.

An interdenominational thanksgiving service is held at the Lifeboat Station – the clergy perform the service from the deck of a Lifeboat.

Sea-themed hymns are sung accompanied by the Brass Band and a collection is made for the local Lifeboat crew.
