In 1954 an OHPS resolution to Hastings Borough Council was passed, that "This Society views with grave concern the possibility of 1a High Street and the Old Town Hall ceasing to exist as buildings of vital important to the life and history of the Old Town, and expresses a strong recommendation that all possible steps be taken to restore these buildings to a fit condition, and to find uses worthy of their historic and architectural merit."
The Stables Theatre - By the early 1950s the building was semi-derelict and threatened with demolition. Old Hastings Preservation Society (OHPS) was determined to save it and set about fund-raising. Supporters included Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Sir Winston Churchill, then Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.
In 1956 the Society founded the Fishermen’s Museum to provide an interpretation of this important local industry and to preserve and add to its heritage collection.
In 1967 the Society started Old Town Week, still held annually in August, see http://www.oldtowncarnivalweek.co.uk
